On February 27, 2020, Woodridge School District 68 held their Read Across America day with a goal of a guest reader in every class. I knew immediately that this was something I wanted to do, and started thinking of a way I could incorporate some Solar System Ambassador excitement!
I selected “The Darkest Dark” by former International Space Station commander Chris Hadfield as my book, and was lucky enough to share it with two incredibly curious Kindergarten classes. Col. Hadfield is one of my favorite space personalities. His book “An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth” took me about a day to get through and is full of life lessons that I definitely quoted at my job interview for my current position!
The kids all loved the story of a young boy who uses the beauty of space to control his fear of the dark, and all promised to work really hard in math to become astronauts, especially when they found out they were the right age to be some of the first humans to make it to Mars!
This was such a nice way to have my first event as an SSA, and has really energized me to do more.
